How to Handle Long Layover with the Kids at the Airport
Experiencing layovers may happen during a travel flight and when your kids are with you on a travel vacation, to keep them from being fussed up during the layover so they will not be unruly and create a commotion in the airport, it’s best to work out some productive activities with the kids during the duration of the layover.
The advantage of technological devices
Technological devices can be lifesavers for a sudden layover announcement, so be ready to bring out your available devices, like smartphone, portable DVD players, tablets, headphones, etc. for your kids to be busy playing with non-violent games or watch a child friendly movie or hear music with the headphone and smartphone or read an e-book through the tablet or even go with them for some quality family photos around the airport.
Most international airports, especially the top ones, have first class amenities, such as restaurants, duty free shops, souvenir shops, massage and spa facilities, a museum, upper deck for plane-watching, and many more; therefore, having these facilities are reasons to bring the kids and make an airport tour, enjoying the whole duration of the layover period, discovering all the airport facilities and services and even take some souvenir shots to some of these facilities.
Take pleasure with a picnic at the airport
Waiting for the long layover to be completed can definitely make kids be super hungry, especially when they’re travelling, so take pleasure in letting them enjoy a short picnic in the airport and pull out together your travel shawls and spread them over the airport floor and let the kids sit down and have a snack or meal, while you make use of the time to talk over your travel itinerary or simply enjoy the chat while passing time.
Try a scavenger hunt game
If you think that electronic devices are not good for your kids during the entire layover, you can take an alternative idea of introducing a scavenger hunt game, but for as long as you are assured that the airport is safe and that your kids are already teenagers, such that the kids will have a fun time scavenging for items which you list down for them to find at the gate or outside the tarmac or to any of the airport locations.
Go to a hotel
Sometimes, the long layover is an overnight layover, so with that kind of long wait, consider taking the kids to a hotel nearby so they get the benefit of a good night’s sleep or having a brief pool swim and take a respite from the travel stress before having a restful night and be energized for your next travel journey.
