Ways to Improve your Employees’ Potential
When people start working at a new job, they desire to give their best. They are excited at the thought of meeting new people and learning new skills. They would like to work with their gifts to make a difference in the company and need to feel valued.
However, most times, the employee’s expectations are not met, and within a short time, they become unhappy, feel unfulfilled and might even begin looking for other jobs. As a manager, you should support and protect your employees’ desires to do an excellent job. We’ll discuss steps to enhance your employees’ performance to ensure your workers are motivated and unlock their potential.
When an employee starts to work for your organization, you must provide them with some training so that they’re not stranded in their new occupation. You should encourage and support them particularly in their first two or three months. Your employees have different characteristics, skills, and knowledge which they bring to your workplace. In addition, they have different needs so you must make customized plans for each individual for development and learning. You need to assist them to understand which career path to follow. You should consider providing your employees with distance learning classes besides sending them to training classes. You may also consider giving them short-term transfers to different departments, project work and so forth.
Many employees consider their managers as their mentors. They look to them for advice and guidance as they work. They have to learn from you the way to get things done. Understand when to mentor and train your workers as they learn the ropes of your organization. When mentoring the employee, allow them to make their goals within some given constraints. They should decide on the methods to utilize to achieve these goals. You can guide them on the available options and how they might handle the challenges that they face along the way. Your role as their mentor is to support and encourage them as they go along. You should give your employee time as you coach and mentor them. They also need to have some feedback and support from you as they learn and grow in the business.
You need to take time from the day’s work at least once annually and talk to your employees formally. You should run performance appraisal interviews together. These interviews typically cover three areas which are; measuring their progress from the last year, new objectives for the coming year and also a review of their learning and development. You must give them time to prepare so that you can get a candid two-way discussion.
